Weekly Combined Weighted Average Feeder Cattle Report

Market: Billings Livestock Commission, MT
Market: Miles City, MT
Market: Public Auction Yards - Cattle, MT

Receipts: 8,151 Last week 732 Last Year 7,574

Compared to the last full week of sales (12-18-18): Feeder steer
calves weighing less than 450 lbs sold with steady undertones in
a narrow comparison; 450-749 lbs steers sold mostly 4.00-8.00
higher. Heifer calves weighing under 450 lbs were too lightly
tested to trend, however steady to higher undertones were noticed.
400-599 lbs heifers sold mostly firm to 5.00 higher, 600-699 lbs
heifers sold mostly 10.00 higher. Demand was mostly good this week
on a attractive quality offering overall. Many calves were fully
preconditioned and weaned this week. Flesh conditions were very
light to light. Demand for light weight calves suitable to run on
grass was mostly good however limited offerings were seen. CME
feeder positions improved this week after floating lower much of
the holiday break. Live cattle prices have improved giving way
to improved feeder demand. Market activity this week was mostly
active. Weigh up cows sold on mostly good demand this week as
feeding buyers were very active in securing offerings. Packers
were less than enthused about buying any cows to put away on feed.
This allowed feeding buyers to get their fill as many high quality
sets of cows come to market this week. Feeding cows sold mostly
firm to 5.00 higher. Packers only showed interest in cows not suitable
to feed this week as they purchased these blemished cows for immediate
harvest. Packers started the week showing very light demand for
slaughter cows, however as the week progressed demand improved.
Slaughter cows sold unevenly steady from weak to 1.00 higher.
Slaughter bulls sold mostly 1.00-2.00 higher. Cow and bull quality
this week was average to attractive. Offerings this week consisted
of 71 percent feeder cattle, 4 percent slaughter cows, 3 percent
slaughter bulls, 21 percent feeding cows and bulls and cows returning
to the country, balance bred cows, heifers, and pairs.
